Director of Engineering

Instinct Science is a growing Philadelphia-based animal health company working on unique technology solutions for state-of-the-art veterinary hospitals across the globe. 

We’re seeking an experienced Director of Engineering who is looking for a new career opportunity to be the next member of our growing team. The ideal candidate is a seasoned leader who is efficient, thoughtful, detail-oriented, and motivated by working on challenging yet meaningful work that has the potential to shape the entire profession. 

The Instinct team is fully distributed, thus geographic location isn’t important as long as you can overlap with our regular business hours (Mon-Fri 8-5 ET).

Position Summary 😺 

You join to lead a talented and growing engineering team to create and maintain an environment that allows our Software Engineers to individually grow while efficiently building high-quality software by using critical thought and care-filled guidance, all while shaping  how our team works, collaborates, and communicates.


You will use your experience and empathy leading engineering teams at scale to support the team in embodying our values and building success for our customers. As the leader of the engineering team, you will also collaborate with other department leaders to accomplish both customer and company objectives.


Responsibilities May Include (but aren't limited to) 💪 

  • Partnering with our CTO and fellow engineering/product leaders to propel our team and products.

  • Performing regular team check-ins to foster individual growth and development.

  • Managing software development projects by setting requirements, goals, and timelines in collaboration with the Product and QA Teams.

  • Ensuring teams are applying modern software best practices and meeting commitments for on time delivery of work.

  • Working with finance to prepare and manage the engineering department’s budget.

  • Designing strategies for future development projects 

  • Monitoring reliability and performance of all internal systems to suggest improvements.

  • Coordinating with external stakeholders for new integrations and tools.

  • Partnering with our Product Managers building trusted relationships between teams.

  • Engaging in the recruiting and interviewing processes helping to identify and attract highly skilled engineers to add to our growing team.

We’re Looking for Someone With

  • At least 7 years of experience managing or leading technical teams at scale

  • At least 4 years of experience building software applications professionally

  • A proven track record of establishing and executing department level vision for teams of engineers

  • Strong technical background with experience writing highly scalable modern software

  • Wide technical experience in many areas including back end, front end, DevOps, QA, web, mobile, and data science.

  • Familiarity with software project management 

  • A high bar for code quality with belief in automated testing

  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills with experience to resolve problems efficiently

  • A desire to mentor and support a team of software engineers


Bonus Experience 💡

  • Experience working in a leadership role at an entrepreneurial technology company

  • Ability to challenge and improve our current architecture and operation processes

  • Working knowledge of relational databases

  • Previous work on health care, medical records, veterinary, or pharmacy software

  • Previous work on financial analytics and reporting

  • Usage of React, Elixir and/or Erlang in production or similar languages

  • Previous remote leadership position, preferably as part of a small growing team at scale
